🐾 Why a Sheepadoodle? (And Why I Still Love the Standard Size)

This is something I get asked a lot.

ā€œWhy a Sheepadoodle?ā€And lately, ā€œShould I go mini or standard?ā€

And the truth is, I’ve thought about this quite a bit—not just from a breeder standpoint, but from actually living with these dogs day in and day out.

Why a Sheepadoodle at All?

There’s just something about this mix that works. The fact that they don't look like every other doodle on the block, and the intangible "Nana" quality that this breed has makes them fit into homes just right.

You take a Poodle, which is incredibly smart and trainable… and you mix that with an Old English Sheepdog, which is steady and affectionate… and you end up with a dog that feels very balanced.

They’re playful, but not over the top. They’re smart, but not constantly trying to outmaneuver you. And more than anything, they really like being with their people, whatever their people are doing - they want to be there.

The Shedding (Or Lack of It)

One of the biggest reasons families start looking at Sheepadoodles is the coat.

They don’t shed like most dogs do. Google will tell you that Old English Sheepdogs shed - I don't know what to say to the great google gods, but having lived with OES for YEARS - NO THEY DON'T! My husband tells me that the scientific explanation is that the OES sheds some, but never blows their coat like a lab, and that the little shedding they do gets caught in their other hair and then is removed when they're brushed or groomed. Ok - sure - I just know that I can put on a pair of black pants, our OES Blueberry can rub all over me on my way out the door and it's JUST FINE! To me - that's the definition of "no shedding".

You’re not going to have hair all over your floors, your clothes, your furniture… and if you’ve lived with a shedding dog before, you know how big of a difference that makes.

Now, it’s not completely ā€œno maintenance.ā€You’ll trade shedding for brushing and grooming.

But most families feel like that’s a pretty easy trade.

What They’re Like With Kids

This is probably my favorite thing about them, it's the "Nana" (you know, Nana the nursery dog from Peter Pan?) quality about them.

Sheepadoodles are just… good with kids.

Not in a perfect, robot-dog kind of way. But in a real-life, ā€œthis dog fits into a busy householdā€ kind of way.

They tend to be patient. They don’t get easily overwhelmed. And they’re usually very tolerant of all the loud, chaotic, unpredictable things kids do. (Maybe it's just my kids that are loud and chaotic?)

They want to be involved. They want to be near you. And they don’t take offense easily, which goes a long way in a family setting.

Compared to a Poodle

I love Poodles—but they’re not for everyone.

They’re sharp, like they might be able to escape from Alcatraz sharp. Poodles are very aware, and sometimes the combo of sharp and aware makes them a little intense.

Sheepadoodles tend to take the edge off of that.

They’re still intelligent, but they’re more relaxed about it. More easygoing. A little softer in their personality.

For a lot of families, that ends up being a better fit. Sheepadoodles are easier to just chill with.

Mini vs Standard (My Honest Take)

We've had a mini poodle, standard poodles, OES, mini sheepadoodles and standard sheepadoodles. So this is where I’ll just say what I’ve seen.

Standard Sheepadoodles tend to be more calm and mellow than minis. (The same is true for pure bred poodles too, minis are more high strung than the standards.)

Smaller dogs, in general, often come with more energy packed into a smaller body. They can be a little busier, a little more reactive, and sometimes harder to settle.

Standards feel more… steady.

They still play. They still have personality. But they’re usually more content to just be part of your day without constantly needing something from you.

The Size Question

A lot of people worry about getting a bigger dog.

But in real life, a calm, well-mannered larger dog is often easier to live with than a smaller dog that’s always in motion.

It’s less about size, and more about temperament. And the standard Sheepadoodles tend to land in a really nice place.

Final Thoughts

There’s no perfect dog for every family. But Sheepadoodles come pretty close for a lot of people.

They don’t shed. They’re loving and people-oriented.They do well with kids. And they tend to have a temperament that fits naturally into family life.

And if you’re trying to decide between mini and standard…

I’d at least give the standard a serious look.

They just have a way of settling into a home that feels easy.
